Background
CD8, also known as cluster of differentiation 8, is a cell surface glycoprotein expressed primarily on cytotoxic T cells, but also on natural killer cells and some dendritic cells. As a critical component of the immune system, CD8 serves as a co-receptor for the T cell receptor (TCR) and plays an essential role in antigen recognition and T cell activation. Upon binding to major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I molecules presenting antigens derived from intracellular pathogens or aberrant cells, CD8 facilitates the initiation of the immune response, leading to the destruction of infected or malignant cells through the release of cytotoxic molecules and the induction of apoptosis. The dynamic regulation of CD8 expression and function is essential for orchestrating effective immune responses against pathogens and tumors, making it a key molecule for research aimed at understanding and manipulating immune-mediated diseases.
