Background
E-Cadherin, a type I transmembrane glycoprotein encoded by the CDH1 gene, is a pivotal molecule involved in cell-cell adhesion and tissue organization. Functioning primarily in epithelial tissues, E-Cadherin mediates calcium-dependent homophilic interactions between adjacent cells, contributing to the formation and maintenance of adherens junctions. Through its cytoplasmic domain, E-Cadherin connects with the actin cytoskeleton via catenin proteins, providing structural integrity and facilitating intracellular signaling pathways crucial for cell polarity, migration, and differentiation. Dysregulation or loss of E-Cadherin expression is associated with disrupted tissue architecture, increased invasiveness, and metastasis in various cancers, highlighting its significance in both normal development and disease progression.
